Hiking North and Middle Tripyramid Mountains in Winter
Temperatures in the single digits and teens did not deter us from hiking this out and back to Middle and North Tripyramid Mountains in winter for 37 and 38 of our winter NH 48.

Pine Bend Brook Trail to North Tripyramid
We began this hike at Pine Bend Brook Trailhead along the Kancamagus Highway. While there’s no designated parking lot, you can park along the side of the road for trail access. There are not a ton of spots here, so we were happy to nab one. It was a cold morning and we were prepared for a frigid hike up to the Tripyramids. The day was beautiful with clear skies as the sun rose higher and streamed through the trees. The trail gave us a nice easy warm up, crossed a few tiny streams, and then began to climb in earnest.
After the steeps, we passed Scaur Ridge Trail, staying on Pine Bend Brook Trail for about 0.8 mi more up to North Tripyramid. We loved how the trail passed under dense tree cover in shaded darkness and intermittently popped out into open spots brightly lit by the sunny day. It gave some points along the trail the feeling of looking out from a dark tunnel. We were also surprised to get a nice view of Mt. Washington behind us through the trees along the trail. When we reached North Tripyramid, we took in the view with a snack and headed on along Mount Tripyramid Trail toward Middle Tripyramid.

We made quick time of the 0.8 mi stretch between North and Middle Tripyramid, once again enjoying the beauty of the day as the sun shone through the trees. There was another little viewpoint at the summit of Middle Tripyramid so we took a few photos there and then turned around to head back the way we came.
Back to Descend Pine Bend Brook Trail
We retraced our steps back over North Tripyramid and down Pine Bend Brook Trail. Descending the steeps was fine, but we took some careful steps at some spots – nothing out of the ordinary winter hiking in the White Mountains experience. We cruised out the last flat section feeling good after a great day in the wilderness.
